THE ROUTE AND TERRAIN

 The Route:

Day 1: The Tour will commence on Wednesday 25th June 2025 near to the city of Porto. The route will travel south through the Largares region, before heading southeast over the central mountains of Portugal, to Viseu, where we will spend the first night. Difficult navigation for the guides through Largares and over the mountain region.

Day 2: The groups will maintain altitude as they cross out of Viseu District into Guarda District and towards the Spainish border. The route will drop into the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela before sweeping northeast to the city of Guarda and our 2nd night’s accommodation.

Day 3:  From Guarda, the route will head north with a great day of riding along the Spanish and Portuguese border to the border crossing point of Miranda do Douro. Remaining at 900m above sea level, there are great single track trails following the Spanish / Portuguese border.

Day 4: The Tour will continue north through Braganca, before turning east and crossing the Spanish border. It is at this point we encounter the northern section of the Spanish plains and agricultural areas of Northern Spain. Big rolling trails will take us to the  the farming town of Benavente to finish the day.

Day 5: Riders with travel northeast for a few hours, criss-crossing the Camino de Santiago Trail, before heading due north through the Castilla y Leon region and the lower elements of the Cantabria Mountains, before reaching Cilleruelo de Bezana.

Day 6: The final day will leave Cilleruelo de Bezana heading over the spectacular Cantabria Mountains with amazing trails and mountain views before dropping towards the coast and our final destination in the beautiful coastal town of Castro Urdiales on the outskirts of Bilbao.

The Terrain:

You will need to be prepared to ride a huge variety of terrain and off-road trails. The trails will be a variety of mountain single track, large 4×4 access routes and once departing Porto, will maintain an altitude from 600m to 2000m, until reaching Bilbao.

Portugal & Spain boast a diverse landscape from the high mountain ranges and spectacular gorges along the Rio Do Douro, to expansive agriculture plains & woodland plantations.

The route has been designed for maximum off-road potential throughout, challenging but achievable and ultimately for enjoyment.

Each day will be a full day off-road riding and will be both challenging mentally and physically. The Rotor Adventures guides are there to maintain a good momentum of riding on an ever-changing terrain and manage the group throughout the day.

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WHAT TO EXPECT

This is an ‘Off-Road Tour’, where the focus is on maximum off-road riding from Porto to Bilbao.

Riders are to arrive on Tuesday 24th June ’25 in Porto, and make their way to the designated accommodation, where you will meet up with the Rotor Adventures Team, other riders, your bike and gear.

Each morning, riders are expected to be ready for riding straight after breakfast, with their bags ready to load on the support vehicle. Once breakfast is complete, bags will be loaded and the route for the day will start.

Group sizes will be small, to manage progress and momentum throughout the day and will have 2 guides to support throughout the tour.

Our aim is to finish each day by 17.30, so riders can enjoy their accommodation and relax.

A day generally allows for multiple rest breaks, fuel + lunch/snack stops as required but riders will be reminded, there is a requirement to cover reasonable distance off-road to complete the tour over 6 days.

Group Support

Each group will have x2 Rotor Adventures guides who will manage everything you need day-by-day, stage-by-stage as you make your way across Portugal and Spain. The guides will carry GPS locaters and trackers, along with necessary tools and medical equipment.

There will be a Rotor Adventures support vehicle on hand to carry your overnight gear and essentials for the tour. The support vehicle will be tracking the groups throughout the riding day and remains in as close a proximity as possible, to assist where necessary.

The route is broken into smaller 25-30 mile stages in order to manage the safety of the group, route progress, rest stops, refuelling, support vehicle access and any unforeseen circumstances.

Each stage is planned separately depending on group progress and to ensure comfortable accommodation is maintained throughout your journey.

You will meet with the support vehicle every evening as a minimum, where you will have access to your overnight gear and spares.

Your riding day can begin anytime between 08.00 – 08.30 and this is generally dictated by breakfast timings. Riders need to be prepared to be out on a day ride for between 8-10hrs with regular rest pauses, lunch and fuel stops.

ACCOMMODATION

It is planned for accommodation to be of high quality, based on single occupancy with breakfast included.

Accommodation is provided from Tuesday 25th October to Monday 30th June 2025 inclusive (7 nights)

SAFETY

The riding group will constantly be in contact with the support vehicle and other guides via mobile communication, on-bike satellite communication and tracking equipment.

The support vehicle will remain as close as possible to the group during the riding day, paralleling the route where it can. The support vehicle will carry main tools and spares plus a primary medical trauma pack.

Your two guides in each group will carry essential tools and medical equipment appropriate for general mechanical work and for minor medical incidents.

Be aware the group will be riding off-road motorcycles in primarily remote locations. Access can be very limited, and all riders should always ride appropriately, with this in mind.

In the event of an incident be it a breakdown, medical or otherwise, the guides will make decisions, as a priority, around the safety of individuals and the group. Where possible and safe to do so, the support vehicle will recover riders/bikes in order the remaining individuals may continue.

The weather in the mountains of Portugal and Spain can be changeable throughout the year. Routes may be changed accordingly for the safety of the groups.

In the event of a serious incident, emergency safety measures will be initiated to maximise the safety of everyone and may result in major route or schedule changes.

Bike and Gear Transportation

Rotor Adventures Limited will transport your motorcycle, riding gear and small spares to and from Porto and Bilbao, along with all export and import requirements for transporting to and from the EU.
